Une Autre Chambre is a true family home, carrying a heritage that has travelled through the centuries. By telling the story of our ancestor Mahé, it felt natural to express our attachment to a few emblematic figures of feminism.
First and foremost, Olympe de Gouges. This feminist figure of the French Revolution imposed herself naturally when we discovered that she had lived just next to our house upon her arrival in Paris in 1770.
In 1791, Olympe de Gouges wrote the too little-known “Declaration of the Rights of Woman and of the Female Citizen.”
Robespierre did not appreciate the affront; she was sentenced to death two years later.
The life and history of Olympe inspired us to pay tribute to several women who left an indelible mark on the history of feminism.
There are 17 of them. Their names are engraved on the doors of our rooms.
Agnès Varda, Ruth Bader-Ginsburg, Simone Veil, Françoise Giroud, Niki de Saint-Phalle, Rosa Parks, Paulette Nardal, Simone de Beauvoir, Gabrielle Chanel, Colette, Marie Curie, Alexandra David-Neel, Louise Michel, Julie-Victoire Daubié, Flora Tristan and George Sand have joined Olympe de Gouges to present to you… “Une Autre Chambre”!
